Gmail Account Error: Unable to Receive Email, How to Resolve

Some customers have complained that they are unable to access their Gmail accounts using the Mail app on their iPhone or iPad. “Cannot Get Mail” is the error message that users have reported seeing. The ‘’ mail server is down.

“Verify that you have entered the appropriate account information in Mail settings,” they are advised when they go to check their emails in Mail. The message “Account Error: Gmail” appears on the Mailboxes screen as well.

If you have a Gmail account set up on your iPhone or iPad but can’t receive or send an email, I’ll teach you how to solve it in this post. If your Google Gmail account isn’t working, there are a few things that could be causing the issue.

This is a major problem. Unless you fix it, you won’t be able to send or receive emails using your Gmail account in the Mail app. You won’t be able to open or read emails either.

Check these first

You might wish to go over the following quick steps first:

  • Make sure there isn’t a Gmail outage by checking the Google System Status page.
  • Close the Mail app and reopen it.
  • Make sure your Gmail password is up to date. You may check this by going to on Safari and seeing if you are able to log in.
  • Check to see if any of your other email accounts on your iPhone or iPad are still active.

Update your device

Make sure your device is running the most recent version of iOS or iPadOS. Built-in apps like Safari, Mail, and FaceTime will be updated or upgraded when you update or upgrade your device. It’s quite simple to update your gadget. You can do so without using any wires. Go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone or iPad.

Restart your device

Simply restart your computer or device. This might help you with your Gmail issue. It’s simple to accomplish and well worth a go.

To switch off your device, navigate to Settings > General > Shut Down on your smartphone. Alternatively, you can use the buttons on your smartphone to turn it off. This varies slightly depending on the model.

Then press and hold the side or top button until you see the Apple logo to switch on your device.

Check your Internet connection

Make sure your iPhone or iPad’s internet connection is working properly. Gmail problems can be caused by a shaky Internet connection.

Check to see if your gadget has a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. If you’re trying to access your Google account through cellular data, make sure Use Cellular Data for FaceTime is turned on.

Go to Settings > Cellular or hit Mobile Data, or go to Settings > Cellular Data and then turn on Mail if you’re using an iPad. You could also take a look at these:

  • Turn on Airplane Mode, then turn it off after a few seconds.
  • Restart your router or modem.

Check your mail settings

A multitude of wrong mail or fetch settings could be the cause of Gmail not working on your iPhone or iPad.

This could be a problem with the settings.
Apple provides a help page for e-mail. You can check your email settings on this page. Here’s how to do it:

  • Go to Apple’s support page for further information.
  • Look for the section under “Mail Settings Lookup.”
  • Enter the email address associated with your Gmail account.
  • Then select “Lookup settings” from the drop-down menu.
  • Your email settings will be sent to you.
  • Manually examine your settings in Settings > Mail > Accounts.

Remove the Mail app and install it again

If Gmail won’t load and Mail appears to be disabled, simply erase the Mail program and reinstall it. Here’s how to do it:

  • Touch and hold the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad. Remove the app by tapping it.
  • Restart your computer or device.
  • Then go to the App Store and download something. Look for the Mail application. Re-download and install.

Delete the Gmail account and add it again

If the problem persists, you may want to delete your email account from your iPhone or iPad and then re-add it. Before you begin, keep the following in mind:

  • This will just erase the account from your device, not your Gmail account. In other words, you can still use a web browser to access your Gmail account.
  • All emails on your device will be deleted as a result of this action. Emails, on the other hand, will not be removed from Gmail servers.

Here’s how to go about it:

  • Tap Settings > Mail > Accounts > Select the Gmail account that isn’t working > Delete
  • Account on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Restart your device after you’ve deleted everything.
  • Go to Settings > Mail, hit Accounts, and then Add Account. Choose Google. You’ll be sent to Google, where you’ll need to enter your username and password and then follow the onscreen steps.
  • Retest after you’ve added the account. Is Gmail up and running again?

Reset Network Settings

If the problem persists, you should try resetting your network settings. Because this suggestion may appear extreme, I did not put it in the “Internet connection” section above.  Resetting network settings, according to some customers, resolved their Gmail issues.
